Why is this position open?
We are ready to grow our team to execute on our vision. There are a number of forces at play:
1) internet is now a viable distribution platform for hi-def video
2) the "coming of age" of the connected living room--over 40% of TVs sold today have WiFi built-in
3) liberalization of premium video content from the chokehold of traditional Pay TV operator monopolies
Describe the current team this person will join, including the reporting structure.
This person will join a team of 4, and all of these folks are mobile engineers.
In general, we wear a lot of hats. People will do front and back end, as well as whatever the current challenge calls for.
This is definitely a roll up your sleeves environment.
Our team has a lot of relevant experience (Sling Media, Boxee, Clicker, VUDU, Rovi, NVIDIA) and our VCs are been behind a few household names in the space (TiVo, Sonos) as well.
What percentage of the candidate's time will be spent on existing products/business, versus items that are new?
This position is predominately new work. You will take ownership over the product, and that may mean making some fixes to your work if necessary.
What challenges will this person face on a daily basis?
We are a fast moving environment with frequent releases to our applicaiton.
You will need to be able to work within a collaborative team that works together to solve large problems.
How are you positioned within the industry and what are your growth plans?
Our strategy fits squarely into a changing landscape. The number of pain points surrounding the TV experience is going through the roof (explosion of content choices, devices on which consumers watch TV don't work with each other, a fragmented social experience), and we are creating the solution: an interface for next-gen TV. We think the best interface for TV will actually not be on your TV set, but on your tablet or smartphone.
What is your business model?
It's not on TechMeme every day, but the $500 billion TV industry is about to get the wind knocked out of it. The Future of TV is coming, it's coming soon, and it's going to be enormous. Oh, and it's a ton of fun to be a part of.
