What are the top requirements to qualify for this position?

All candidates should have demonstrated leadership skills, a passion for education and community, and effective collaboration skills. Other qualifications include:

·At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in fundraising, relationship management, or business development. Private, public, and non-profit experiences are all valued. The ideal candidate will possess a track record of effective client cultivation and sales.

·Comfort operating in an entrepreneurial, ’start-up’ environment. Energized by the opportunity to build the local presence of a strong, nationally branded leader in the expanded learning time model.

·Ability to create high-level collateral and presentation materials.

·Maturity to work with highly-visible civic, philanthropic, and business leaders locally and nationally.

·Experience effectively managing individuals to achieve ambitious goals.

·Results-driven; excellent time and project management skills.

·Ability to effectively motivate and inspire Citizen Schools staff locally and nationally that are not direct reports, but are vital to the success of the work.

·Strong team orientation, ability to provide and accept feedback, and ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.

·Highly developed interpersonal skills, excellent oral presentation and written skills.

·Demonstrated skill in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Skill with relational databases (including Salesforce) preferred.

Why is this position open?

The Director of External Affairs is a newly created position for Citizen Schools California. This year we are continuing to grow our presence in the Bay Area, with an eye towards directly impacting nearly 1,000 students and strengthening the communities we serve, as well as making the case for fundamentally reimagining the learning day as a matter of city and state policy. In order to achieve this, we are investing significant resources in our External Affairs Department – the team charged with educating and mobilizing key influencers in the corporate, civic, and government sectors as champions for Expanded Learning Time - which includes the creation of this new role.

Describe the current team this person will join, including the reporting structure.

This is a full-time role reporting directly to the Executive Director of Citizen Schools California. The Director of External Affairs will be joining a 4 person leadership team in the region and working closely with the national Development and Civic Engagement Departments. In California there are 11 staff members working in the regional office and 70+ emerging educators and program leaders directly serving students and communities in the Bay Area.

What percentage of the candidate's time will be spent on existing products/business, versus items that are new?

Citizen Schools California is at a tipping point in its growth and development as a region. The Director of External Affairs will spend significant time and energy developing partnerships that will generate approximately $1 million in new funding this year. The Director will also be focused on deepening existing partnerships, building a strong team and creating systems to better support our work.

What challenges will this person face on a daily basis?

The Citizen Schools California Director of External Affairs will be responsible for realizing the full potential of relationships with donors and volunteers in the Bay Area, and driving the generation of resources required to further scale Citizen Schools’ innovative and proven program model.

The Director will lead on fundraising and volunteer strategy (including recruitment, management and retention), will recruit volunteers, and manage relationships with partners.
